Hello,

Shelley Amato

I’m Shelley Amato and I help people use nutrition to support their health goals, lose weight, prevent and manage chronic disease, and improve their gut health.

With over 20 years experience as a Registered Dietitian and additional training and education in Integrative and Functional nutrition, I combine the best of both worlds: conventional and holistic therapies into one comprehensive plan.

There are currently very few Registered Dietitians in Canada who are also certified Integrative and Functional Nutrition practitioners, and this approach has expanded my toolkit and lifestyle strategies in a big way!

When you work with me, we will be looking at underlying causes of disease and I can offer more than just the low FODMAP diet.

What I love about functional nutrition is there are so many options and avenues to try. It’s very empowering.

There is always something more we can do, something different we can try.

It’s an investigative process, and a personal one, because your body and your life are different, and there are no one-size-fits-all answers.

My journey into integrative and functional medicine (gut health especially), really took a deep dive when my son (he hates when I talk about this!) struggled with Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).

As a mother and as a health care provider, I was driven to keep digging for answers.

This led me to learn more about functional labs, gut healing supplements and of course the many underlying factors: including food sensitivities, nutrient deficiencies, increased intestinal permeability (aka leaky gut), an unbalanced microbiome, the gut-brain-immune axis, and chronic inflammation.

Having more information empowered us to begin narrowing down what really was making him feel bad, and we’ve been on a journey ever since optimizing his diet and lifestyle to feel better.

I know the frustration of getting simple answers that don’t solve your problems. I know how hard it is to get help to feel better when you have a chronic illness that is hard to diagnose or manage.

And I know the grit it takes to keep searching.

My approach to diet, integrative and
functional medicine, and weight loss is:

Completely personalized to you, your health history, your body, and your lifestyle.

Research-intensive. I study each case, I read non-stop, and I don’t give up until we’ve found something that works. I often feel like a medical investigator!

Practical and realistic, because the suggestions I give you have to be livable!

Not limited to diet. I believe we need to treat the underlying factors causing the imbalance or disease, which may include diet, or supplements, exercise, sleep, mindset coaching and other lifestyle changes. We look at EVERYTHING!

Client centered. I take the time to listen to you, because you are the expert on your body and nobody knows how you feel better than you do.

I am here to help and support you in feeling better and reaching your health goals. This is a partnership. So if you’re ready to throw everything but the kitchen sink (and maybe that too) at your health challenges, let’s go!
